2014 BJ McLachlan Plate Results: Mishani Honcho Beats Wicked Intent

December 29th, 2014

The futures price on the previously undefeated Wicked Intent to win the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast on January 10 has eased out following his upset loss to Mishani Honcho in the BJ McLachlan Plate 2014 on the weekend.

A traditional lead-up to the lucrative Magic Millions-restricted classic a fortnight later, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 B.J. McLachlan Stakes (1200m) was run and won in an upset by the Les Ross-trained Mishani Honcho.

Jockey Chris Whiteley gave the Jet Spur gelding a gun ride from the inside alley where the $21 outsider relished the Soft (7) track at the Gold Coast Racecourse and was able to beat home the odds-on favourite Wicked Intent ($1.40) by two lengths.

“The wet track gave me a bit of confidence and so did barrier one,” winning hoop Whiteley said on Saturday.

“He’s been missing the start a bit but from that draw it gives him time to pick himself up.

“The inside is never the best place to be when it’s wet here, but Wicked Intent was drawn alongside him and we were able to follow him into the race, so it wasn’t a huge disadvantage.

“He dipped a couple of times in the run which was a concern, because against the favourite I thought we would need every single thing to go right.

“Not at any stage in the run did I think I had Wicked Intent covered.

“It was only at the 200m point when I got to within a half-length of him that I could see he had no more to offer and I thought I would pin him down from that point.”

Barry Mitchell’s beaten favourite had come off three earlier wins, including his debut victory at the track in early October, and was last seen flying home by over four lengths to take out the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1050m) on a Soft (6) at Doomben on December 13.

He couldn’t match the zip of the upset BJ McLachlan Stakes winner this time round however, and was followed over the line by another roughie shot in Star Of Night ($41) who was nearly four lengths off the winner in third.

Wicked Intent’s jockey Chris Munce had little to say post-race except that his mount ran well, Wicked Intent easing out to $5.50 shared favouritism in the all-in Magic Millions 2YO Classic betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au with Claudia Jean.

As for Ross’s champion Mishani Honcho, he is not eligible for a Magic Millions run Saturday week and instead will be sent out to the paddock.

“It’s nice to win a good race with him, because he’s not a Magic Millions horse and he will go to the paddock now,” Ross told The Courier-Mail.

The stable still has a strong hand in the race however in Sequalo filly Fequendly ($13) who ran faster time than Wicked Intent for her debut win at the Gold Coast in October before a nine length romp over 1050m at Doomben 21 days later.

She flopped back at the track last start however when third to Pepperano, an effort she gets the chance to atone for on Wednesday evening at Toowoomba in the $50,000 Magic Millions QTIS Two-Years-Old Plate (1050m).
