The Group 3 BJ McLachlan Plate (1200m) is one of two Group races running at the Gold Coast on Saturday, which means the 2015 Magic Millions is fast approaching.
13 two-year-old sprinters are set to run in the 2014 BJ McLachlan Plate in a last-ditch effort to earn their place on the field in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on January 10, three of which are offering single figure odds in the betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au.
Barry Mitchell’s Wicked Intent is the firm favourite at $1.75, unsurprising considering the colt is early favourite to win the MM 2YO Classic.
The colt has won all three of his career starts to date including the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1050m) at Doomben Racecourse on December 13. Mitchell has decided to run him in the BJ McLachlan as a test over 1200m for the first time and against tougher rivals before the main event in a fortnight.
Wicked Intent has made quite an impression in his relatively light career, winning four and a half lengths clear his last two times out and by two and a half lengths on his debut.
He will jump from barrier three on Saturday with Chris Munce in the saddle.
Two other runners are offering single figure odds for the 2014 BJ McLachlan Plate – Right Of Way ($4.50) and Saga Of The Storm ($7).
Gai Waterhouse’s Right Of Way remains without a win but has finished second and third in her two career starts – the Celebrations Appin Plate (1100m) and Tab.com.au Plate (1100m). The filly will have to overcome a wide start from barrier 13 on Saturday with Damian Browne to ride.
The Liam Birchley-trained Saga Of The Storm won the Brisbane Marriott Hotel QTIS Handicap (1110m) last time out on his second start. The two-year-old filly will jump from barrier two with Glen Colless as hoop in the BJ McLachlan Plate.
