The 2015 Magic Millions Race Day is getting closer and Gold Coast racing is heating up with two black-type races running this Saturday.
The Group 3 BJ McLachlan Plate (1200m) is limited to two-year-olds and the sprint race is often used as a final effort to secure a spot in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on January 10.
Barry A Mitchell’s Wicked Intent is the current favourite to win the $2 million feature race with odds of $3.60 at Ladbrokes.com.au after winning all three of his career starts. The trainer has opted to run the colt in the 2014 BJ McLachlan Plate however to test him against tougher competition and the 1200m distance before the big day.
Wicked Intent won the Sequalo Legacy QTIS Plate (900m) on debut before going on to win the Breakfast Creek Hotel QTIS Handicap (1050m) and Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1050m). On each occasion the colt has proven too good for his competitors, flying home to win by at least two and a half lengths.
The colt is set to jump from barrier three with Chris Munce to ride for the third consecutive time on Saturday.
The Les Ross-trained Mishano Honcho has scored the ideal start from barrier one with Chris Whiteley in the saddle. The gelding won his maiden on debut back in October before finishing runner-up to Wicked Intent in the Breakfast Creek Hotel QTIS Handicap on November 29. He then won the IVECO QTIS Handicap (1200m) one week later before failing to make an impression in the Brisbane Marriott Hotel QTIS Handicap (1110m) on Saturday, finishing 10 of 13 runners.
Saga Of The Storm ($15) and Right Of Way ($18) have both made a name for themselves in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic betting and are both set to run in the BJ McLachlan Plate.
The Liam Birchley-trained Saga Of The Storm will jump from barrier two with Glen Colless in the saddle. The filly finished third to Mishani Honcho in the Iveco QTIS Handicap (1200m) on debut before winning the Brisbane Marriott Hotel QTIS Handicap on Saturday.
Gai Waterhouse’s Right Of Way will have to overcome a wide draw from barrier 13 with Damian Browne. The filly has yet to score herself a win but has managed to place in her two career starts to date.
The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Stravico has already been scratched from the race, leaving just Havasay and Blink ‘N’ Miss on debut.
