Many of the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) potential runners are set to run in the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Plate (1200m) at the Gold Coast this Saturday, acting as a lead-in race for the $2 million main event on January 10, including early favourite Wicked Intent.
The Barry Mitchell-trained colt is the $3.60 favourite in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au after winning all three of his starts this preparation.
Wicked Intent made his debut in the Sequalo Legacy QTIS 2YO C&G Plate (900m) at the Gold Coast on October 4, which he won by two and a half lengths. The colt then made his next two starts at Doomben Racecourse with Chris Munce in the saddle, winning both the Breakfast Creek Hotel Handicap (1050m) and Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1050m) by an impressive four and a half lengths.
While three wins from three starts would seem like enough preparation for any juvenile horse heading to the 2014 Magic Millions 2YO Classic, Mitchell is keen to test Wicked Intent against the likes of tougher competition in the BJ McLachlan Plate as well as testing him at the 1200m distance before the big day.
“He won very well again and everything seems to be going to plan with him,” Mitchell said.
“He’ll have his next run in the B J McLachlan and I’m not worried about stepping up to 1200 metres.
“He’ll run the distance on his ear.
“I would image all the good ones which are aiming for the race will run in it.
“Chris [Munce, jockey] has a very big opinion of this bloke.”
20 two-year-olds have been nominated for the 2014 BJ McLachlan Plate, including Gai Waterhouse’s Carriages, however this field size may decrease when the final field is released later this week.
