Formerly a Listed level event, the 1200-metre BJ McLachlan Plate was upgraded to Group 3 status in 2011.

Restricted to two-year-old horses, the BJ McLachlan Plate typically sees some of the best juveniles in Queensland line up to compete for a share in $150,000 in prize money.

The BJ McLachlan Plate is held alongside the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1300m), which is run under the same conditions but for three year olds.

The race is one of a number of black-type two-year-old events held in Queensland throughout the summer and horses often come into the race on the back of the Listed Phelan Ready Plate and the Listed Calaway Gal Plate.

Leading trainers often have runners in the BJ McLachlan Plate and the 2011 event was won by Gai Waterhouse-trained Driefontein ahead of Kelso Wood’s Sizzling.

Both horses highlight the quality of the event, with Drieftontein going on to win the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and run sixth in the Golden Slipper and Sizzling completing an unbeaten black-type campaign at the Brisbane Winter Carnival before heading to Melbourne for the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Doomben Racecourse

In 2015 the BJ McLachlan Plate was held at the Gold Coast Racecourse. Renovations at Eagle Farm led to a reshuffle of BRC events.

The BJ McLachlan Plate is usually held at Doomben Racecourse in Brisbane which stands as one of two premier racetracks in Brisbane.

One of the unique features of Doomben Racecourse is its tight-turning track, which often requires some getting used to for horses racing on it for the first time.

Like all race tracks in Queensland, races are run in a clockwise direction at Doomben Racecourse.

Apart from the BJ McLachlan Plate, Doomben hosts a number of exciting races including the Group 1 BTC Cup, Doomben 10,000 and Doomben Cup.

BJ McLachlan Plate Betting

BJ McLachlan Plate betting is fairly popular, with a number of punters getting well into the event. The race represents one of the first betting opportunities for Queenslanders following a fairly dry period, so a lot of punters turn out for it.

It can be difficult to accurately bet on the BJ McLachlan Plate. As a two year old race, many of the horses in the field have very little prior racing experience, and if they have any, it’s unlikely to be black type.

As a result, punters tend to go for boxed options. Picking the best three horses in the field and putting them on for a boxed trifecta can be a pretty good choice, and it certainly pays well if you pull it off.

The only alternative to that is studying the form and making a few educated guesses based on comments by connections, breeding and physical composition of the horse. Because it is a two year old race, betting on the BJ McLachlan Plate is very tricky.

The BJ McLachlan Plate is a popular race but will no go close to matching the betting turnover on the Melbourne Cup 2015.
